Branching Out

Last year when I decided to leave the comfort of a regular paycheck and instead be responsible for creating my own fortunes, I didn’t realize that I’d actually end up doing something very different than I had set out to do.  My goal was to consult and build a team of CMS professionals and work with customers on achieving their project goals. As one of the original Interwoven members, I didn’t really think that I could ever end up doing anything else.

I couldn’t have been more wrong…

What I’ve actually ended up doing is still working in CMS, mostly HP TeamSite and LiveSite, but I’ve been adding more and more mobile design. I fell in love with responsive or adaptive design, and had the realization that most customers either lack a mobile presence or have one that isn’t optimal. So, I decided that I’d concentrate deeply on mobile and let my other consultants keep the lights on with TeamSite and LiveSite development.

The results have been amazing. Not only does our pipeline look incredible, but our customers are asking us to tackle even bigger mobile projects. Remember I never considered myself a designer, nor did I believe that I knew enough about mobile to make recommendations to executives at top 100 companies. I stand corrected. Seeing and implementing successful mobile design takes little more than understanding the target market and the technologies involved.

One customer was all it took to realize there is more opportunity out there than meets the eye. Although I’ll always love working in the CMS arena, my newest passion is mobile first technology. I’m as guilty as my children in using my mobile for everything, so why wouldn’t I want my own company building solutions for the content I consume the most. This is now where we are and I can only imagine where we will be for the immediate future as more and more customers are asking for mobile first design.

Next time you need something from google, pay attention to whether you do that from your desktop or your phone. Chances are it’s going to be from your phone, and even more likely is the content you’ll get in return isn’t formatted for your device. If it isn’t, let me know, it could be someone we can help.
