As the new year approaches, everyone and their brother starts to make New Years resolutions. I’ve never been one of those that needs to wait until the next year to start on a new goal. If I have a goal in mind, I start on it right away. This year is no different, since I’ve been fully committed to losing the extra pounds I put on over the past year, I’m setting a goal for my birthday in April. I want to be 190 pounds, which would be a total weight lose of 43 lbs.
A big part of my mental makeover, was the shedding of fat that I was carrying on my body due over indulgence of all the wrong foods. I’ve found that avoiding sugar is the best kickstart to dropping weight and feeling better. I’ve eliminated all fast foods, soda, alcohol and processed foods. I’ve been eating high protein and leafy colorful vegetables for almost every meal.
I didn’t want to starve myself, as that has a reverse effect, so I concentrated on good habits for every meal. Living with an alcoholic changed my diet completely, so now I’ve got to change it back. Supplements have also been a key ingredient to my daily routine. I’m making sure I get the necessary muscle recovery onboard after every workout and that I’m taking something to increase my metabolism. I experimented with the whole ketosis thing, but it really wasn’t working for me. I didn’t want to feel hungry, so I opted for the slow loss approach of 2 lbs a week. So far it’s working.
On Thanksgiving 2017 I weighed in at 234 pounds. Terribly depressed about how I looked, and actually probably weighed more after the feast we had. But the next day I got into the gym and haven’t stopped going since. So far I’ve lost a healthy 22 pounds, which makes me feel amazing. It’s so different to fit into normal looking clothes and not have to worry about looking pudgy. I’ve lost a whole pant size and I can tell I’m going to be losing another here very shortly.
The goal is to be about 190 by my birthday in April. That’s roughly 22 more pounds in 4 months. If I were to lose 2 lbs a week for 12 weeks, I’ll hit my goal. Totally doable, but I’m also facing the challenge of putting on weight due to the addition of muscle. I don’t want to be a skinny dude, more of a fit and healthy looking 43 year old. So the goal may change as I start to see some development. I also expect to live my life and not avoid all foods under the sun. I do enjoy a good meal, so I’m not going to live as if I’m trying to be on the cover of Mens Health.
It’s a good goal which will but me at the size I think I’ll be comfortable at. Nothing extreme, only good old fashion exercise and healthy eating.
